The Pikler Approach

At The Rainbow Sprinkles, we strongly believe that children are competent beings from birth, capable of active participation in their own development when given respectful, sensitive support. This belief is at the heart of the Pikler Approach — a philosophy that deeply influences our work and the way we support families. We are committed to building respectful and peaceful caregiving, relationships that honour each child's natural pace of development, autonomy, and need for emotional security.

What is the Pikler Approach?

The Pikler Approach is a philosophy of infant and toddler care that emphasizes respectful relationships, freedom of movement, and authentic self-initiated play. It invites adults to slow down, observe carefully, and trust in each child’s natural developmental timetable.

The Pikler Approach helps caregivers and parents trust that children, when provided with a secure and respectful environment, will unfold their abilities naturally and joyfully.

Key principles of the Pikler Approach include:

Respectful Caregiving

Every caregiving moment (diapering, feeding, dressing) is seen as an opportunity for connection, trust-building, and communication.

Freedom of Movement

Infants are not put into positions they cannot get into or out of by themselves.      They are allowed to explore movement naturally at their own pace.

Self- initiated Play

Children are given the time, space, and simple materials to engage deeply in      self-initiated play, fostering concentration, creativity, and problem-solving.

Background of the Pikler Approach

The Pikler Approach was developed by Dr. Emmi Pikler, a Hungarian pediatrician, in the mid-20th century.

Her inspiration came from her early experiences working as a family pediatrician, where she observed that children who were given respectful, unhurried care — and who were allowed to move freely — developed better physical health, emotional security, and independence.

She believed that trusting relationships, freedom of movement, and respect for the child’s competence were critical for healthy development from the very beginning of life. Dr. Pikler first applied these ideas in her medical practice with families and later brought them to life at the Lóczy Institute (officially known as the Pikler Institute) in Budapest. There, infants and young children thrived under sensitive, respectful, relationship-based care.

Her revolutionary work showed that even in group settings, with consistent and attuned caregiving, children could form secure attachments, a strong sense of self, and healthy autonomy.

Today, the Pikler Approach continues to influence early childhood practices around the world, especially in infant-toddler programs, parenting education, and professional training.

Why the Pikler Approach Matters

Research and decades of practice have shown that when children experience:

  • Trusting, respectful relationships, they develop secure attachments and a strong sense of self-worth.
  • Freedom to move, they achieve better physical  coordination, confidence, and body awareness.
  • Opportunities for uninterrupted play, they develop curiosity, creativity, and complex thinking skills.
  • Attuned caregiving, they build emotional security and resilience.

The Pikler Approach highlights that early experiences of respect, trust, and emotional connection are foundational for lifelong learning, well-being, and relationships.
